Macrocarpa is one of New Zealand’s most versatile and widely used softwoods, valued for its natural durability, workability, and suitability for both structural and outdoor applications. It performs well without chemical treatment, making it a popular choice for cladding, landscaping, and general construction.

Grades of Macrocarpa

  • Clear Grade

    Minimal knots and defects. Used where appearance matters — interior linings, joinery, and high-end cladding.

  • Box Grade

    A balance of appearance and usability. Suitable for general building, cladding, and machining where some knots are acceptable.

  • Rustic / Character Grade

    Features visible knots and grain variation. Ideal for feature walls, architectural finishes, and projects wanting a natural look.

  • Landscaping Grade

    Structural and lower appearance grade timber used for sleepers, garden edging, retaining, and outdoor structures.

  • Utility Grade

    Lower grade timber typically used for firewood or rough applications, ensuring full utilisation of the log.

Redwood

Redwood is a premium softwood known for its stability, workability, and rich natural colour. It is particularly well suited to interior applications and high-quality finishing work, while also performing well in exterior settings when properly detailed.

Grades of Redwood

  • Clear Grade
    High-quality timber with minimal defects. Used for premium joinery, interior finishes, and feature applications.

  • Select Grade
    Very good appearance with minor natural features. Ideal for visible applications where a clean finish is required.

  • Merchantable Grade
    General-purpose grade suitable for cladding, lining, and standard building use.

  • Character / Rustic Grade
    More knots and variation, used for feature work or where a natural aesthetic is desired.
